Tumblr Survivor Athena is a Tumblr group game based on the American version of the Survivor reality game show.
The show maroons around a group of 16 or more strangers divided into two tribes in a hot environment where they must compete in challenges to earn a reward or immunity from expulsion from the game at Tribal Council. Medical conditions such as injuries due to bans or deciding not to continue because of infections may have contestants eliminated other than by vote. The final two or three players remaining in the game face a jury of anywhere from seven to nine players who decide who the worthy winner must be. The player with the most votes earns the title of Sole Survivor.
The Athena Series was founded by Jay B. and Abbey in May of 2016, when they hosted Monuriki together. Once Monuriki came to a close and Cami was named Sole Survivor, Amanda approached Abbey and Cami about hosting a season that would come to be known as Motu Maha. After Motu Maha's conclusion Amanda suggested a series be made and Abbey had the idea to make Monuriki be the first season in the series, Motu Maha the second. Given that all four women had played a part in the series creation it was decided that, as the series went on, these four would be the founders of the series, who would be involved, at least in some capacity, in all future seasons.Once the four agreed on the foundations of the series and why it was different than other Tumblr Survivor series - namely, it's very strong and seriously enforced anti-bullying stance and its belief in vetted hosts with solid judgment and no likelihood of cheating or interference, even when friends are playing - the name Athena was chosen, as it was founded and continues to be guided by strong and intelligent women.
When Duncan came to them and asked to host for the series, they seriously deliberated, as it was initially going to be an only-female hosted series. But they were soon convinced and he became the host of the third season of Athena: Mindoro, with Amanda helping him closely throughout the season. Then the hosting team of Brian, Jay O, and Drew came along wanting to host, and the original four agreed that they were all well-prepared to handle their own season, so Jay B. and Amanda were only minimally involved, just making sure that the cast and hosts followed Athena's moral code.
